I agree with this, the problem for West Ham is the fanbase is drawn from the cockney diaspora. We are not a living community as such. We no longer drink together in pubs around Mile End or along the Barking Rd. I doubt even Dagenham and Chadwell Heath even have a 'mob' these days. We don't know each other's families or recognise each other in the stands from those pubs. Largely we are scattered around the southeast of England and part of our motivation for turning up at games is nostalgia and perhaps a subconscious longing to belong to something that no longer exists.
So the dynamics are very different to other clubs that still draw their fans from a coherent local culture and community: Leeds, Newcastle etc. We are more removed, more like observers than in the moment. The passion and spontaneity needed to respond in the way we did in the past is harder to replicate in our modern fanbase. You can see it in the lack of originality in our songs. They used to be more original and wittier.
Anyway. Most people probably stopped reading all this by now so I will get off my soap box and shut up.

FC, most of the people around me are great and to be fair after a heated exchange we had a bit of a cuddle and high five after we scored the equaliser but i just felt that after Frankfurt went ahead it wasn’t the time for everyone to sit down and quietly watch the match. I thought the Frankfurt atmosphere was terrible, the early goal seemed to suck all the enthusiasm out of the ground. Im on the end of block 140, next to the aisle and block 141. I refused to sit down for the first 5/10mins as that is the point that the team needed us to step up and create the atmosphere but about 10 boring cunts behind me started bitching and moaning so i told them to get on their feet as the team needed them.
Im a STH and i listed to them talk about work and business every single game whilst paying no attention to the match, i could tell you their 2 year projection on profitability its that mind numbing. Was totally different against both Saville and Lyon, everyone on their feet but against the Krauts so many just seemed to give up, it was pathetic.

Correct me if I am wrong but the club don't employ the stewards. I thought it was part of the stadium deal that Newham had to provide them (along with corner flags). If we were employing them then perhaps we could be more 'selective' in our recruitment (although I am not sure how they'd get away with asking that at interview and it not being against some woke employment law). Any ball boy helping out any opposition player in any way should be banned from ever doing the role again.

Tbh the atmos at Lyon home didn't seem that special either, considering how big a game it was.
Every time anyone tried to start a chant in my bit it was just the same dozen or so people joining in til it fizzled out.
(Not saying Upton Park was always jumping, cos it wasn't)

Re stewards and sometimes ball boys supporting the opposition, they should get child STHs to be ball boys/girls. Then there would be no embarrassing episodes with the ball boys gathering around their favourite opposition players after the match like we've had at times since we moved

When we get a bunch of pissed up young lads in its fucking great. However, like society in general, people are generally more polite or used to mucking about on phones and chatting when they are supposed to be supporting. Its just the way society has changed. However, there have been some great atmospheres this season.

Two things bother me, day trippers with some clearly supporting the other team and the stewards. Arsenal supporting stewards yesterday was overwhelming.
That’s how it always tends to be over there.
West Ham play home games there, but it’s not our home.

Since upton pk went all seatr there were always rows about standing up same as there are now
At Upton Park everyone knew where stood and where sat, it was also fairly self policed!

Re that quater final against Everton, I remember queuing half way up Green st for a good couple of hours on the sunday before to get tickets as they opened specially.
I never remembered much about the game itself as i got in late and ended up by the old snack bar in the corner the place was totally mobbed and one of the great nights under the lights.
Another one that stands out was a league cup tie mid 90s against Wimbledon, Dicks sent off early Devon rolling back the years and mad dog scoring a screamer to win it.

When the atmosphere is just "OK" it would be vastly improved by being an actual football stadium. It makes it easier for OK support to become good support when you're actually in a tight stadium with a decent gradient.
Everyone has to be 100% up for it to be a great atmosphere in the Bowl given we're so far away and the seats are go far back

I agree with Swindon Hammer. We go to a few West Ham games that are unforgettable then think they were all like that.
I remember taking my now wife to her first game, a night game v Liverpool at Upton Park nearly 20 years ago. In my head I was thinking this has all the ingredients needed for a great atmosphere. It was fairly flat and we lost. She didn’t get what was so special. But when I think of the games that stick in my mind there weren’t so many amazing games. I remember the quarter final before that semi up at Villa Park. That was amazing with people dancing on the top of cars outside on Green street. But most games were like yesterdays v Arsenal. Bursts of crowd chanting and singing but disappointment and an otherwise forgettable game. But we will all remember Seville, Chelsea and Liverpool this season moan if it’s not repeated as though something is terminally wrong.
